In the south east corner of Småland is the small town of Torsås. Here, just 6 km from the coast, is situated the beautiful garden of the Johners’. Nearby, just 3 km off the coast from the village of Bergkvara in the strait of Kalmar, lies the well known light house “Garpen’s fyr”. Link (hitta.se)

The garden of the thousand plants

The garden of 2000 sqm. is divided in two equal parts. One area is more formal, the other is gradually blending into the surrounding woodland. There is a gentle slope from the house down towards the woods. This part of the garden enjoys the full sun all day. The garden’s natural terrain is mostly made up of moraine and stone. This has made it possible to shape the garden into many areas with an irregular layout, as well as creating different levels. The garden has two ponds with turtles and fishes. The garden contains a variety of around 1000 plants, coming from all over the world. Many of which are rare and by themselves are worth a visit.

Between East and West

Open to the east and west the sun shines pleasantly all day long in the garden. Especially in the middle of the day one is able to feel the warmth of the sun all around. The surrounding warmth, together with the abundance of flowering plants and birdsong, leaves one with a sense of nature’s vastness, a nature without borders.

The tree trunks and stones of varied heights and sizes are harmoniously placed throughout the grounds. This in turn calls forth a feeling of the stones and tree rich area of the Småland landscape. At the same time the placing of these stones and tree trunks give a contrast to the multifaceted plant environment.
